Murcia
With its unbeatable climate, huge unpopulated soft sand beaches, unspoilt mountains and wilderness, excellent value housing, three major airports and excellent road networks, Murcia is a wonderful region of Spain.
The cost of living in Murcia is low compared to much of the rest of Spain, the motorways are free, irrigation water is subsidised, European grants abound. If you are relocating to Murcia your money will go a long way.
In many ways Murcia is a microcosm or miniature version of Spain itself. It is very hilly, topping out at over 6000 feet, has green pastures, highlands, lowlands, sweeping valleys with African style vistas, cooling rivers, swathes of verdant citrus groves irrigated still by Moorish canals. Then there is the Coast, where National Parks prevail, huge unpopulated soft sand beaches, hidden coves, sudden cliffs going down to the sea, the biggest inland lagoon in Europe, and the regional capital itself, a bustling very Spanish city, where few ex-pats have yet dared put up shop.
With its 23 blue flag beaches, unspoilt mountains and wilderness, affordable housing, excellent road and plane networks, cheap cost of living and unbeatable climate, Murcia is a choice that many find hard to beat.
Location
In the South East corner of Spain, Murcia incorporates the Costa Cálida, perhaps made most famous by the La Manga Club. The main areas are Murcia town, Lorca, the important port of Cartagena, the big inland lagoon of the Mar Menor, and then inland to the furniture / wine towns of Yecla, Jumilla and Bullas, not to mention the pilgrimage centre of Caravaca and the stunningly beautiful area in the north west of the region.
Climate
One of the best climates in Spain, officially Mediterranean Semi-Arid, and boasting over 3,000 hours of sunshine, and only 30 rainy days a year. Rainfall is similar to the nearby Costa Blanca, but when it rains in Murcia, it rains very hard indeed. Inland, rainfall is higher, and the temperatures higher in summer, but Murcia’s dry heat is easier to tolerate than the humid heat of, for instance, Madrid.
Average Temperature
Summer: 33C
Winter: 17C
Language
Castellano, the Spanish we all recognise and learn, is the exclusive language in Murcia. There are no complications from other Spanish languages which impinge on life around Alicante, Catalunya, Valencia and Mallorca. Schooling for your children is therefore made easier and everyone speaks the same language, with little parochial bias or interference. For a family relocation this is a great advantage.
Airports
Murcia is blessed with three International Airports all within 45 minutes of each other. There is Alicante at 9 million passengers per year, then Murcia/St.Javier which is about a third that size, and then the new airport in Corvera, near Murcia town which is being made to accept millions more people.
Schooling
There are plenty of good private and International Schools around and more planning to open. The private schools are cheap when compared to the UK at about 5000 euros per child per year all in.
Hospitals
There are three main Hospitals in Murcia town, and further ones in Cartagena, Molina de Segura, Cehegin, Cieza, Yecla, Lorca, and San Javier.
