RELOCATION TO MURCIA

LOCATION: South East corner of Spain, below Alicante, incorporating the Costa Cálida, perhaps made most famous by the La Manga Club. The main areas are Murcia town, Lorca, the important port of Cartagena, the big inland lagoon of the Mar Menor, and then inland to the furniture / wine towns of Yecla, Jumilla and Bullas, not to mention the important pilgrimage centre of Caravaca and the stunningly beautiful North West Murcia.

CLIMATE: one of the best climates in Spain, officially Mediterranean Semi-Arid. The sunniest place in Spain with over 3000 hours per year, or over 320 days sun per year, with only 30 days of rain. Rainfall at 300 to 350mm per year, is similar to the nearby Costa Blanca, but only because when it rains in Murcia, it rains very hard indeed. Inland rainfall can be double that figure, and the temperatures a little higher in summer and lower in winter, particularly at night. Summer temperatures are 33 deg. average during the day and in winter around 17 degrees. It is a DRY heat however, which does make it more manageable than other places, such as Madrid.

LANGUAGE: Murcia people speak ONLY Castellano which is the Spanish we all recognise and learn. There are NO complications from other Spanish languages which impinge on life around Alicante, Catalunya, Valencia and Mallorca. Schooling for your children is therefore made easier and everyone speaks the same language, with little parochial bias or interference. For a family relocation this should not be underestimated.

AIRPORTS: Murcia is blessed with three International Airports all within 45 minutes of each other. There is Alicante at 9 million passengers per year, then Murcia/St.Javier which is about a third that size, and then the new airport in Corvera, near Murcia town which is being made to accept millions more people.

SCHOOLING: because of the absence of any second Spanish language vying for supremacy, it is refreshing to know that children who go to State Schools ( which on the whole are excellent and staffed with dedicated, vocational, and traditional teachers ) will not have to learn another language such as Valenciano or Catalan, something which is perfectly useless in the real world.

There are plenty of good private and International Schools around and more planning to open. The private schools are cheap when compared to the UK at about 5000 euros per child per year all in.

HOSPITALS: there are three main Hospitals in Murcia town, and further ones in Cartagena, Molina de Segura, Cehegin, Cieza, Yecla, Lorca, and San Javier.

PROPERTY PRICES: Murcia still holds out as the BEST VALUE property in Spain. Next door Almeria boasted the cheapest property but their prices have gone up considerably, and if you now want a home in the warm and sunny part of Spain, then Murcia is your best bet in terms of value for money.

COASTAL PRICES: 2bed flats and apartment start at 120,000 euros ( 83,000 sterling ), and 3bed villas down at the beach cost from 280,000 euros ( 193,00 sterling ) upwards.

INLAND PRICES: town houses for refurbishment can still be had for 45,000 euros ( 31,000 sterling ),  and 4bed, 2 bath villas can be bought for 200,000 euros and upwards ( 137,000 sterling ). Excellent family houses with land and great views can be bought for 220 to 320,000 euros ( 150 to 220,000 sterling ) depending on the area and its proximity to the beach.

Prices inland are still rising and investment is recommended, particularly in the up and coming areas.

Why Relocate to Murcia ??

Murcia  currently holds many top rankings. It is the most migrated to part of Spain, has the most rapidly growing economy, has the highest percentage of its economy dedicated to housebuilding, is the sunniest part of Spain and still has the best value property available in the South of Spain. With three major airports within 45 minutes of each other it is arguably the best served area in Spain for air traffic.

In many ways Murcia is a microcosm or miniature version of Spain itself. It is very hilly, topping out at over 6000 feet, has green pastures, highlands, lowlands, sweeping valleys with African style vistas, cooling rivers, swathes of verdant citrus groves irrigated still by Moorish canals. Then there is the Coast, where National Parks prevail, huge unpopulated soft sand beaches, hidden coves, sudden cliffs going down to the sea, the biggest inland lagoon in Europe, and the regional capital itself, a bustling very Spanish city, where few ex-pats have yet dared put up shop.

Murcia is cheap, the cost of living is low here compared to the rest of Spain. A beer at a bar costs a Euro, a gin and tonic at a Club four euros, a chicken 4 euros,  a big meal out for four at a cheap restaurant would be under 50 euros and an expensive one would be 120.  An average house is still only around 120,000 euros, the rates bill on  a detached house often no more than 350 . The motorways are free, irrigation water is subsidised, European grants abound. Relocating to Murcia is cheap, and your money will go a long way.

With its 23 blue flag beaches, unspoilt mountains and wilderness, affordable housing, excellent road and plane networks, cheap cost of living and unbeatable climate, you need look no further than Murcia should you be thinking of relocating to Spain.
